The Hawai'i Academy of Arts and Science also known as HAAS is an
emerging school community in the Puna district consisting of
students from grades K-12. On June 21, 2001, the Hawaii State Board
of Education issued a charter to HAAS, officially opening our school.
From the first day students came to HAAS, it was been offering
unique programs to ensure quality and holistic education for the
children of our community. HASS' main 7-12 campus has witnessed
the development of new school buildings and is evolved into a
beautiful setting for inspiring learning, enhanced achievement,
develop strong moral values, and produce citizens with the skills
and desire to make the world a better place.
HAAS is now leading the way for educational renewal in the State of
Hawai'i. It has innovative small community schools that nurture the
head, heart and will be co-partners in planning, implementing, and
evaluating the work we do together.
SURF CLASS
HAAS is the only school through out the State of Hawai'i that has a
surf class for the students. Cherry yeah, that means the students
take a regular class to learn about the ocean and study the art of
surfing.
All students are welcomed to take the class, experienced and
inexperienced can learn to surf, long board and body board. This surf
class includes taking the students everyday with highly trained and
certified instructors to surf the waves at Pohoiki bay. It's an
awesome sight to see the class in the real environment training for
fun and for the up coming local surf meets.
This school has alot of rippa's that has a good head on there
shoulders respecting the Kai (Ocean) and the Aina (Land). Every year
HAAS gets there motivated surf class volunteer to malama Pohoiki.
The students do a great job cleaning, painting murals on eye sore
county park cement dividers, picking up trash, making keiki ponds
and paths for all to enjoy.
